The Television Creative Department
by
Daniel D. Williams
Dan Williams was seven years old when he went on Captain Satellite, an experience that led him to seek his own television rocket ship—or so his mother theorized. The Television Creative Department tells the story of forty-four years in Canadian broadcasting; a system now reduced to a shadow of its glory days. From hazy hijinks as a pot-smoking longhair in community programming to prestigious awards for ads that pushed artistic (and practical) boundaries, the memories on these pages depict an all-consuming career: both a lifeline and a curse for a man on the run from his feelings. When his mother is diagnosed with cancer, Dan longs to prove his creative worthiness to his biggest fan, but a stagnant workplace and crumbling marriage lead him to an even more important pursuit: the art of being human.
