Suzy and the Time of Changes
by
S. M. Dunning
The third and final book in The Perilous Times Saga finds Suzy shattered by the death of the friend with whom, in an ill-starred adventure, she almost succeeded in destroying “the purest concentration of evil on earth.” Suzy blames her willfulness for the tragedy but also suspects that her parents have betrayed her. Now she must learn how to carry on while bearing the burden of guilt and mistrust. Sensing that she is heading toward a final showdown with the figure behind the dark forces that threaten the world, Suzy must also continue to care for the turnip, who has become more and more a part of her. Indeed, trying to figure out where she ends and the turnip begins is an increasing challenge. And with the Resistance dangerously divided over whether to use violence, Suzy struggles to learn whom to trust, when to fight, and how to meet her ultimate challenge: confronting the Magister on her own. Can she resist the voice urging her to “quit, then. Give up. It’s all pointless”? Suzy and the Time of Changes is a thrilling story about priorities, loyalties, and resisting tyranny for YA readers, but it is also a profound study in courage, faith, and moral agency—a resonant conclusion to a thought-provoking, immersive adventure in the spirit of classic ethical fantasy.
S. M. Dunning is a retired literature professor whose interest in mythic fiction was sparked by reading The Lord of the Rings as a teenager and deepened by the Christmas gift of a boxed set of Charles Williams novels, which he devoured over the holidays. His fascination with Williams’s unique metaphysical vision led to a PhD thesis at Cambridge and a lifelong fascination with the Inklings, C. S. Lewis’s literary circle at Magdalen College, Oxford. He is the co-founder (with Monika Hilder) of the Inklings Institute of Canada and the author of the award-winning The Crisis and the Quest: A Kierkegaardian Reading of Charles Williams (Paternoster, 2000). S. M. Dunning lives in Chilliwack, BC, with his spouse, where besides reading and walking, he loves concocting stories for his six insatiable grandchildren.
