Traditional Gujarati Cuisine & Other Indian Vegetarian Recipes
An Offering of 175 Recipes and Cooking Tips
by Devanshi Maharaja and Hiranya Maharaja

Cuisine is an art and a science intricately woven with cultural practices and familial love. When Devanshi Maharaja landed her first job and moved away from home, she was also moving away from her mother’s wonderful cooking. In turn, her mother gifted her with a diary filled with handwritten recipes of traditional homemade Gujarati dishes, which Devanshi has now passed on to her daughter, Hiranya. Inspired by the handwritten recipes of their beloved mother and grandmother, Traditional Gujarati Cuisine and Other Indian Vegetarian Recipes is an offering—or Arpan—to join them at their family’s kitchen table. Whether you’re a novice or experienced in the kitchen, this is an invitation to cook and enjoy 175 healthy and delicious recipes of authentic Gujarati cuisine, along with popular vegetarian dishes from other parts of India, including Indo-Chinese delicacies. Packed with easy-to-follow tips and techniques as well as an informative background on Indian spices, lentils, and curries, this cookbook explores the richness of tastes, textures, and appearances of Indian cuisine across the vast Indian subcontinent, from north to south and from east to west. Yet, at its heart, each dish is a home-cooked meal to be enjoyed with family and friends.

Equipped with a naturally inquisitive mindset and scientific temperament, mother-daughter duo Devanshi Maharaja and Hiranya Maharaja have researched and discovered that Indian vegetarian cuisine is firmly rooted in health science, and by adopting best practices, it will lead to a healthy life. Having experimented and mastered cooking Gujarati vegetarian dishes and other Indian vegetarian dishes, they also hope to guide readers to cook simple and nutritious meals as well as ceremonial vegetarian meals. Devanshi and Hiranya live in the Greater Toronto Area with their family. This cookbook is dedicated to the culinary expertise of their mother and grandmother, Saryu Avashia.
