Embark on a visual voyage through a significant period in the lives of Portuguese immigrants—exploring their dreams, their labour, their challenges, and their contributions to the mosaic that is Toronto today. Composed by an artist who immigrated to Canada with his family in 1964, the black and white photographs in this book pay tribute to a community that continues to shape the cultural fabric of the city. Even as the landscapes change, the human presence remains central. Whether in bustling cities or quiet corners of the world, Gilberto’s lens seeks gestures, expressions, and moments of connection that bridge cultures and invite contemplation.
Gilberto Prioste has worked as a photographer for over half a century. He studied at the Ontario College of Art, where he began to build a body of work celebrating immigrant experiences in Canada. His photographs have appeared in publications across North America, including NOW Magazine and The Globe & Mail; he has also exhibited extensively. Gilberto’s work is represented at The Clara Thomas Archives, as well as in collections throughout Canada, Europe, and the United States. An active member of the LGBTQ+ community, Gilberto lives in Toronto, where he enjoys keeping fit and pursuing creative hobbies.
