All aboard! Whether we know it or not, we are all riding on the Technology Train, a journey from past to present and into the future, shaped by the development of science and technology. This is the story of that journey for one particular man, and for all of us. Part memoir, part technical history, it spans the last fifty years of technology development—from infrastructure engineering in data centers to the application of synergistic problem solving in institutions that were clients dealing with technology advances—told through the life and stories of one consultant who has described technology infrastructure resiliency an efficiency. Since his first fateful summer job—testing power drills to ensure technical obsolescence at Black & Decker—Bill Angle has worked at the intersection of design, engineering, technology, and business, parlaying those interests into a multi-decades-long career determining, defining, and redefining infrastructure and data center design. Along the way, he was instrumental in developing the first Tier IV data center, creating the new reliability standard for the industry, helped to develop low-latency trading infrastructure for the New York Stock Exchange and Euronext, consulted on the design and completion of the Freedom Tower, and worked with the EPA to develop the Green Energy Data Center Standards now used in the US and around the world, successes that were made possible by the innovative approach to problem solving Bill developed to help him see outside and beyond the typical silos of engineering, operations, and network thinking. But Bill was never alone on his journey, and while The Technology Train is the story of the technological successes, it is also about his relationship with God and his faith in God as the ultimate designer. Here, he shares how this faith guided and shaped his approach to problem-solving and out-of-the-box thinking, cementing his belief in the scientific value of the Bible and its power to develop both our mental and spiritual potential.

A graduate of the University of Maryland (BSc Mechanical Engineering) and the University of Baltimore (MBA Finance), William R. Angle worked as a bank officer at the Maryland National Bank before joining CS Technology (then Com-Site) in the late 1980s. As a principal with CST, he helped pioneer infrastructure development and data center design for companies such as United Parcel Service, VISA, Discover Card, and Cantor Fitzgerald, and for the Euronext, and New York Stock Exchanges among many other clients on four continents. As part of this work, he helped develop the resiliency standards worldwide and worked with the EPA to also develop the Green Energy Data Center Standards. He has observed and helped develop the synergistic problem-solving solution process for accelerating technology applications. Since his retirement, Bill has continued to write, consult, and lecture the application of these techniques to apply to AI, quantum and future energy developments. He was awarded the 2023 Outstanding Contributor to the Industry by Data Center Dynamics. A longtime Maryland resident, he lives in Annapolis with his wife.
