If Rabbits Could Fly
And Other Stories From A Veterinarian's Journey
by
A. G. Lees
If Rabbits could Fly, and Other Stories from a Veterinarian’s Journey An engrossing compilation of stories, thoughts and memories, often comical, sometimes stressful, occasionally dangerous, at times tragic, and always dramatic as told by a master storyteller. You are offered insights into a fascinating overview of how veterinary medicine has evolved since the 1970s, not always for the better, with corporate takeovers of so many private practices. All readers will be captivated by these insightful and infinitely varied stories of comedies, tragedies, and triumphs. Vivid tales recount one man’s life and veterinary career from a young boy’s desire to help animals, ups and downs pursuing a degree in Veterinary Medicine, along with the adventures in the “golden age” of veterinary medicine.
"This book provides an engaging narrative, seamlessly integrating humor and levity with more profound themes. It offers a contemporary interpretation of James Herriot's work, viewed through the perspective of a veterinarian's career that spans from the mid-20th century to his retirement in the early 21st century. It comes highly recommended." —Dr Neil Pothier "Compelling tales of a veterinarian’s life. Tough fisherman soft heart is my favourite. A great read." —Catherine Shields MD FRCPC (Anesthesia) "This is an emotionally rich and deeply human account of a veterinarian’s life and long career. The reader is drawn into each moment, the narrative unfolds with warmth, wit and emotional resonance, crafting a memoir that is both entertaining and illuminating with a natural story teller cadence. Dr. Lees guides the reader through the so called “golden age” of veterinary science, and its evolution, sharing stories ranging from humorous to heartbreaking and from exhilarating to quietly profound." —Jill Smith, RVT
Allan Lees, DVM, BSc, grew up in southern Alberta, working in a mixed animal practice, raising shorthorn cattle, with ranchers, and veterinarians as mentors. Animals and pets have always been a constant in his life. Dr. Lees started and managed a successful small animal hospital for 25 years, and served on the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association. He then moved to Nova Scotia and to farm life in the Annapolis Valley where he ran a contract veterinary company for 15 years, while actively involved with area conservation groups.
