The Little Red Bird
by Sabeela Gokal

“Love doesn’t leave, Noah. It finds new ways to stay.” -Grandpa When a young boy named Noah finds comfort in an unexpected companion, a bright red cardinal, he begins to discover that grief is not the absence of love, but proof of it. The Little Red Bird is a gentle story about grief, loss, and the enduring presence of love. Written with care and warmth, it creates a quiet space for children and adults alike, to slow down, sit with their feelings, and find comfort in remembrance. A gentle reminder that the light someone leaves behind can guide us long after they are gone, just like a small red bird against the warm summer sky.

Sabeela Gokal is a registered Early Childhood Educator and child care director based in Mississauga, Ontario. In her leadership role as a relief resource director of PLASP Child Care Services, Sabeela remains closely connected to early learning practices, professional development, and child-centred education, all of which strongly influence her writing. With years of experience supporting children of all ages and extensive training in special needs education, she has seen firsthand how encouraging self-expression and teaching problem-solving skills helps children to build confidence and resilience. She believes that every child’s imagination holds the power to teach, heal, and inspire. The story explores themes of grief, love, and ongoing connection, offering young readers comfort during moments of loss through the gentle presence of a red cardinal. Written with care and sensitivity, the book reflects Sabeela’s belief in the power of storytelling and symbolism to help others feel seen, supported, and less alone as they begin to navigate complex feelings. When she’s not writing or working with children, Sabeela enjoys painting, reading, spending time in nature, wildlife conservation and exploring creative projects with her loved ones.
