A few years ago, after a holiday in England, Brian Burdon began jotting down thoughts about what he had experienced over the years. Those thoughts grew into a book. In Observations of an Idiot, Brian shares his opinions and reflections on the modern world, covering everything from the mundane—daily habits and navigating life—to weightier topics such as religion and global politics. Now in his late seventies, Brian witnessed profound social and technological change, from the rise of computers and the Women’s Liberation Movement to major conflicts and political upheaval such as the Vietnam War and fall of the Berlin Wall, as well as global pandemics like COVID-19. A war baby from England, he immigrated to Canada with his family and spent many years working in the printing industry. He has had been married three times, so he also knows a thing or two about love and relationships. Throughout his book, Brian comments on current events and personal experiences, often challenging popular opinion and inviting thoughtful discussion. His distinctly British humour runs through every page, blending satire and irony—sometimes at his own expense. Ultimately, Observations of an Idiot is an attempt to leave something solid behind—an ode to this extraordinary and ever-changing world—because, as Brian puts it, “if anyone has something worthwhile to say, it should be put on paper.”

Retired, Brian Burdon lives in a small town just north of Toronto with his wife and cat. When he’s not writing, he enjoys do-it-yourself home building, gardening, fixing cars, and cycling.
