Cancer - From Fear to Hope
A Pioneering Oncologist Reflects on Fifty Years of Practice Change and System Transformation
by William K. Evans

Cancer from Fear to Hope is a personal and authoritative memoir by Canadian oncologist Dr. William K. Evans. Tracing his career from early medical training in the sixties through his leadership roles in cancer system reform, Evans charts the transformation of cancer care from a time of fear and therapeutic pessimism to one of evidence-based treatments and growing hope. The book offers a history as well as a medical insider’s view of evolving cancer therapies. Through candid reflections, patient stories, and firsthand observations, Evans shares how scientific progress, clinical trials, patient-centered care, and system-level reforms reshaped outcomes for cancer patients in Ontario and beyond. The book also documents the emotional and ethical dimensions of oncology practice, and the personal lessons learned along the way. Written for both medical professionals and the general public, this memoir illuminates how far we’ve come in understanding and treating cancer—and why there’s reason for optimism in the years ahead.

"Blending personal experience with decades of medical innovation, Dr. Evans delivers a compelling and hopeful read for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer – which is to say, all of us." —Cindy Watson, Wall Street Journal and USA Today best-selling author of The Art of Feminine Negotiation "This is a valuable book. It’s the kind of memoir the trainees will read for perspective, that policy people will read for institutional memory and patients and families will read because it’s genuinely hopeful without being naïve." —Dr Kevin Smith O. Ont, KSG, President & CEO, University Health Network, Toronto "From Fear to Hope is for anyone who wants to better understand cancer, the people who treat it and the progress being made every day." —Kelsey Nicholson, Manager, Marketing and Community Engagement, Cancer Assistance Program, Hamilton, Ontario

Dr. William K. Evans has spent more than five decades at the forefront of cancer care, research, and health system leadership. Following a decade of clinical practice and research at Toronto General Hospital, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, where he oversaw the building of a new facility, launched regional cancer programs, and pioneered initiatives that improved access and quality of cancer care. Dr. Evans later held senior leadership roles at Cancer Care Ontario and as president of the Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre in Hamilton. His work in integrating evidence-based reviews with economic analysis helped lay the groundwork for the pan-Canadian oncology drug review. Over his career, he has authored or co-authored over 300 scientific papers and presented at numerous international conferences. Currently a professor emeritus at McMaster University’s Department of Oncology, Dr. Evans remains actively engaged in public education through his podcast, the Cancer Assist Show (available at www.cancerassist.ca). He lives in Ancaster, Ontario, with his wife, Jane. They have two sons and five grandchildren.
