The Hummingbird and the Rose
by Sharon Edin

Every summer, a little old lady welcomes a hummingbird to her back garden. She keeps a hummingbird feeder in front of her kitchen window so she can sit and watch him as he drinks from the nourishing sugar water. To demonstrate his appreciation, the little hummingbird always leaves a red rose on the little old lady’s back step before he migrates south for the winter. Gradually, a deep bond of affection develops between them. As the years go on, the little old lady becomes older and frailer. Eventually, she no longer appears in the garden or at her kitchen window. The little hummingbird notices her absence, but he does not know where she has gone. He longs to see her one more time. Where will he find her? And how can he show her how much he loves her?
