PTSD & Paramedics
Get Treatment Without Breaking The Bank
by
Philip Habacon
First responders are trained to stay calm when the rest of the world is on fire. But what happens when the calls follow you home, when the scenes of horror replay at three o’clock in the morning, sleep becomes a distant memory, and you start to wonder if you’re still the same person? In PTSD & Paramedics: Get Treatment Without Breaking The Bank, paramedic Philip Habacon traces the slow build of cumulative trauma across a life in emergency care, from his childhood at Midtown General Hospital in the Philippines to the high-risk discipline of scuba diving in Thailand to frontline emergency calls in frigid Manitoba winters. After twelve years on the job, on October 31, 2023, he was forced to confront what he’d been in denial about for too long: he was deep in the throes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thus began the hard work of climbing back out of the abyss. Far from a neat and tidy story of overcoming, this is an honest, lived-in account of what coping actually looks like—naming the injury, navigating treatment, and rebuilding day by day. Because recovery isn’t about a single intervention; it’s a way of life. Grounded in The Dokkōdō (“The Path of the Loner”), a short work on philosophy by Japanese swordsman and strategist Miyamoto Musashi a week before he died in 1645, Philip offers something rare to first responders and the people who love them—clarity, permission to speak their truth, and proof that no matter how far you’ve fallen, there’s always a way out.
Paramedics can be broken, and in these broken places, we can become stronger.
Philip Habacon is a Filipino-Canadian author and intermediate care paramedic with experience on the ground and as a former flight medic. He is a member of the College of Paramedics of Manitoba and the Paramedic Association of Manitoba. Before immigrating to Canada, Philip spent six years in Pattaya, Thailand, as a PADI-qualified master scuba diver trainer. His previous publications include 55 Things Learned at 55, which gathers hard-won insights from a life shaped by service, adventure, and recovery, drawn from monthly journals Philip has kept since 2013. Philip recently moved to Vancouver, BC. His first granddaughter and most beautiful bundle of joy, Marquise Tanada-Habacon, kept his future bright.. In addition to healing through writing, he travels to places of destruction and recovery - such as the Taal volcano, the Arles ruins, the Hiroshima museum, the Shanghai swamps, the Tagaytay Cockpit Arena, & the Shifen Waterfall. These places taught him what true resilience is all about.
