Lucy and the Sasquatch
by Lulla John

This is a whimsical story of a little girl meeting a Sasquatch while berry picking in Alaska. Lucy is not one bit afraid of the Sasquatch and asks him for directions on how to find her family. She's not afraid of him because he has an endearing overbite and like her, loves to eat berries. She can't wait to see him again and have more adventures with Sassie! This is a great book for early readers to learn about the northern boreal forest and the creatures who sometimes live there. It will also introduce readers to berry picking, a most happy and productive activity which brings families closer together while learning respect for the land.

Lulla John is Dineh (the People) from the Yukon Territory / Alaska border area. This international boundary does not stop her from visiting family on either side of the border. She identifies with her Upper Tanana language group spoken in four villages in Alaska and in Beaver Creek, Yukon. Lulla completed her B.A in Political Science from University of Victoria, B.C. She spent most of her career working for the Canadian civil service and for First Nation governments. Lulla is passionate about travelling. This picture of her was taken while at a writing retreat in Ireland, 2022. Lulla currently lives in Vancouver, B.C and continues to write children’s books. She loves the outdoors, hiking and gardening. She likes nothing better than being with her grandchildren, teaching them about plants, identifying bird calls and harvesting wild berries. Lucy and the Sasquatch is based on a story told to her by her grandmother, Lucy. There will be two other fun stories about Lucy and her Sasquatch friend coming in the near future. Emma Reid grew up in the Northern Irish countryside, studied architecture at Queen’s University, Belfast, then jetted off to Vancouver in 2018 to pursue her love for the film industry. After four years in the art department, she found herself with some extra time due to the industry slowdown in 2023, so she dived into her artistic passions and secured an art studio in Chinatown. As a versatile artist, Emma’s talents span graphic design and traditional oil painting, blending disciplines with a unique touch. Art has always been her go-to for self-expression, especially her love for nature and animals. Enter Lucy Meets a Sasquatch, Emma’s first dive into children’s books. Teaming up with Lulla, she brought Lucy to life, grateful for the enriching opportunity. For more of Emma’s art, check out her Instagram @evrdesign_ or email her at emma@evrdesign.ca.
